His worksheet, self-learning approach has stood the test of time, and perfectly fits advice from the Grattan Institute – teach children the simple foundations of maths at a young age.

According to Grattan Institude’s 2025����report, Australia faces some challenges in its numeracy education.

The report, which focuses on boosting children’s learning in primary schools, reveals some striking statistics. In a 2023 international maths test, only 13 per cent of Australia’s Year 4 students excelled. This figure is level with the US but way below the UK’s 22 per cent and Singapore’s impressive 49 per cent.

Christopher Melrose, deputy general manager at ���߲� Australia, is sympathetic to the challenges teachers face with the school curriculum moving away from traditional learning techniques.

The practice of consistently completing worksheets, and repeated practice, builds skill levels, and confidence, Christopher points out.

“Maths teaching, particularly in primary, should be really explicit and systematic, with excellent curriculum materials, and methods of assessment.

“Students need to be taught a new concept very clearly, in small chunks with clear examples, step by step models, and lots of opportunities to practice,” Christopher says.

“There is enormous pressure on teachers and we believe we can help support maths education in Australia.”

He agrees with the Grattan Institute, that to lift maths achievement, it is necessary to build solid foundations in the early years.

“Some children are going into high school without the fundamentals. They lack the basic four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.”

Toru ���߲� created a curriculum for developing accuracy, and fluency, in the four basics at primary school level that could employ a higher level of thinking and enable the students to engage in different concepts.

“���߲� is quite explicit, and systematic, and step-by-step. It aims to have all students completing additions and subtractions, and do these fluently and quickly by year 2. Multiplication and division follow on,” he says.

The majority of students first enrol in years 2 or 3, so the ���߲� system is able to support their learning from an early age.

Children become comfortable with independent learning

New students undergo an assessment which identifies their learning levels, regardless of age or school years.

“We have a really fantastic curriculum across Australia, and an advanced student honour roll which is our internal record system. We have more than 30 per cent of children enrolled in ���߲� on worksheets ahead of their school grade level,” Christopher says.

“At ���߲� we are always aiming to raise the levels so children don’t get bogged down trying to keep up,” he says.

While ���߲� focuses on the fundamentals of maths and reading, the benefits extend beyond these basics.

“When children advance beyond their school grades, school is easier for them; they gain confidence and are unafraid to tackle something new,” Christopher says. “They have time for extra curricular activities, they are comfortable with independent learning.

“When children are taught maths well, they benefit holistically. If they are not taught well, they are robbed of a core life skill.”

The right materials are key to the learning process and ���߲� is constantly updating self-learning materials, designed for independent study.

Rather than teaching the topics, instructors are guiding the students step-by-step on how to use the material – whether they are working with a pencil and paper, or on a tablet.

At just 10 years old and in Year 4, Lucas has already achieved a major milestone in his learning journey: completing the ���߲� English programme.

Lucas remembers starting ���߲� with simple English worksheets that connected basic words with pictures. At first, he relied on those images to understand meaning. For example, when he saw the word ‘cat’ alongside a picture, he could connect the word and its meaning. But when the same word appeared in a book without a picture, he found it more difficult to understand.

Through steady practice, this began to change. Lucas says his skills improved quickly, progressing through ���߲�, and becoming a more capable and confident reader.

“Suddenly I had an insane skill boost,” Lucas says. “I was speeding through all of the levels.”

Completing the ���߲� English programme is an achievement of which Lucas is proud. He describes the feeling as triumphant, reflecting the commitment required to complete many worksheets and progress through the programme.

Lucas has also seen the benefits of ���߲� at school. In his earlier years, he says ���߲� was more challenging than the work he was doing in class, which helped him excel in English. Later, after changing schools, he found that the skills he was practising in ���߲� were similar to what he was learning at school, helping him feel well prepared.

Lucas believes the reading ability he has developed through ���߲� English will continue to support him in the future. He says strong reading skills will help him understand important information in contracts, job application forms and interviews.

“My current learning at ���߲� can help me understand all of the jargon used in contracts and job application forms and job interviews,” Lucas says.

Looking ahead, Lucas has set a new learning goal of improving in maths. He sees learning as an ongoing challenge, and wants to continue growing and developing.

At 12 years old and in Year 6, Vedansh is already studying more than five years ahead of his school grade in ���߲� Maths.

Vedansh began ���߲� when he was around six years old, starting with the basics in maths before gradually working his way through the levels. As the work became more complex, he continued to progress through consistent practise, as well as the support of his parents and ���߲� Instructor.

“I began with the basics in maths and slowly worked my way up through the levels,” Vedansh says. “���߲� has really helped shift the way I think, learn, and approach difficult concepts.”

Today, Vedansh is studying logarithms and calculus in his ���߲� Maths worksheets, topics typically not seen until the senior years of high school. Studying ���߲� Maths at such an advanced level has helped Vedansh develop confidence in his own ability. He enjoys learning challenging concepts because they stretch his thinking and make school maths much easier to approach.

“It feels very rewarding,” he says. “Working so far ahead gives me confidence and helps me realise what I’m capable of.”

“This also makes schoolwork easier and much clearer to understand.”

Vedansh’s next goal is to keep building momentum in maths and continue developing the skills ���߲� has taught him. He hopes to carry these skills into high school and into more advanced extension maths levels.

Outside of ���߲�, one of Vedansh’s favourite hobbies is chess. He enjoys the planning, logical thinking and problem-solving that chess requires. He sees a strong connection between chess and the learning habits he has built through ���߲�.

“The problem-solving skills and discipline I’ve learned from ���߲� have really assisted me in this area,” he says.

Looking ahead, Vedansh would like to continue exploring advanced maths and possibly study in fields such as science, engineering or technology. He also wants to keep improving as a chess player.

Vedansh believes ���߲� has given him a strong foundation for the future by helping him build discipline, independence, resilience and logical thinking. He expects these skills will support him throughout high school and beyond.

“���߲� has taught me discipline, independence and resilience,” Vedansh says. “The logical thinking I’ve developed will help me in all areas of life.”
